The Newstead & District Historical Society has been meeting since 1986 when a group of interested people in Newstead, Victoria met and decided to form a society to research and preserve the history of a small historic town in Central Victoria.
The society is interested in the history of the area of the former Newstead Shire which included such places as; Campbells Creek, Clydesdale, Fryers, Fryerstown, Green Gully, Guildford, Joyces Creek, Newstead, Sandon, South Muckleford, Strangways, Strathlea, Tarilta, Vaughan, Welshmans Reef, Yandoit and Yapeen in Central Victoria.
This is the area between Castlemaine and Maryborough, two of the larger towns in Central Victoria.
